{"id":543,"date":"2018-03-07T09:27:02","date_gmt":"2018-03-07T09:27:02","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2025-02-18T14:47:33","modified_gmt":"2025-02-18T14:47:33","slug":"writing-dissertations-to-length","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lawteacher.net\/law-help\/dissertation\/writing-dissertations-to-length.php","title":{"rendered":"Writing a Law Dissertation To Length"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Writing a Law Dissertation To Length<\/h2>\n<p>Usually, law dissertations have a word limit, which is designed to make you think carefully about how to organise and illustrate your answer.<\/p>\n<p>Check with your institution whether references, footnotes and\/or bibliography are included in the word count.<\/p>\n<p>In law assignments, word limits are often restrictive so that you develop concise writing skills and omit any irrelevant material \u2013 every sentence counts and you will need to sustain a sharp focus on the question and limiting any tangential discussion.<\/p>\n<h2>To keep within the word limit, you will need to:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Limit yourself only to the relevant issues and ideas.<\/li>\n<li>Select and use only relevant material, legal authority and examples, using only one source for each point made (unless you have an unlimited word count for references).<\/li>\n<li>Reword concepts from source material very concisely, making the relevance of each source very clear.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Remember:<\/h2>\n<p>With law essays, you should give priority to primary source material \u2013 statutes, statutory instruments and cases.
