{"id":529,"date":"2018-03-07T09:27:02","date_gmt":"2018-03-07T09:27:02","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2025-02-18T14:26:33","modified_gmt":"2025-02-18T14:26:33","slug":"plagiarism-essays","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lawteacher.net\/law-help\/dissertation\/plagiarism-essays.php","title":{"rendered":"How To Avoid Plagiarism In Your Dissertation"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Avoiding Plagiarism In Your Dissertation<\/h2>\n<p>Plagiarism can be any of the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Passing off someone else\u2019s words as your own<\/li>\n<li>Passing off someone else\u2019s ideas as your own<\/li>\n<li>Rewording a source but retaining the original ideas it contains, without giving due credit<\/li>\n<li>Failing to put a quote in quotation marks<\/li>\n<li>Copying large sections of someone else\u2019s words or ideas, even if credit is given or quotation marks are used<\/li>\n<li>Giving incorrect information about the source of a quotation \u2013 for example, citing a source that the real author has found and used, that you do not have a copy of<\/li>\n<li>Changing the words but copying the sentence structure of a source without giving credit<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>(Source adapted from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plagiarism.org\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/www.plagiarism.org<\/a>. These are just examples and are not exhaustive.)<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Other Notes&#8230;<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Your university will have its guidelines on plagiarism which you should familiarise yourself with, but in short, your lecturers will be looking for original work.<\/li>\n<li>To be original your work must not contain words or ideas copied, paraphrased, edited, summarised or rearranged from any website, book, journal, essay or any other source, either in whole or in part.<\/li>\n<li>Where it is necessary to include a direct quote, particularly for law pieces or when analysing a piece of text, you should ensure that direct quotes appear in quotation marks and are fully referenced.<\/li>\n<li>Extensive use of direct quotations is not
